According to multiple sources, LSU senior starting point guard Destini Hughes has suffered a devastating knee injury in which she will be lost for the season. Hughes suffered a torn ACL, MCL, LCL and meniscus in LSU's loss to Tennessee. She also has a streched patella tendon.

This is devastating news for LSU as Hughes was having her best year of her career at LSU. Hughes was averaging 7.6 points and 2.7 assists per game. Look for sophomore Jeanne Kenney to assume more of the resposibilities at point guard.

holy Hannah

what in the world HAPPENED?

Sympathies and good vibes to her, because daaaaaaaaamn.

It was pretty horrible. Graphic description ahead...

At the end of the first half, LSU was inbounding with a baseball pass across the court. (about 4 seconds left) Hughes caught the ball and pivoted to turn toward the basket, but as she did so, she had her pivot foot kicked out behind her. Brianna Bass was coming down after having chased the pass and tripped over her pivot foot, torquing the heel outward. POP

Picture it this way: lift your left foot off the ground and dip down so that you’re on the ball of your right foot with your knee bent about 90 degrees or so. Now imagine that you’re pushing forward off that leg while still landing after leaping for the ball, and you’re trying to turn toward the basket. All your momentum, force, and energy is focused through your right knee. Now imagine somebody stomping your right heel and kicking it outward. The knee didn’t stand a chance.

They had to immobilize the knee with an air cast and wheelchair her out of there. It sucked. A few of the LSU gals were holding back tears, and the LVs were offering condolences on the way out since she had to be wheeled past their bench to get to the ambulance.

BTW, the replay is still up on ESPN3. (Direct link – opens in new window.) Fast forward to the final 10 seconds of the first half.

and wince when you get there.

This is awful news; LSU looked fantastic in that game, too.

Also, LSU is a really good team.
Horrible
