I thought the Merc just announced that she signed a multi-year contract. She also said she planned to compete for multiple championships in Phoenix. So this is news to me. Are you sure about this?
Assuming this report is true, it makes sense that Taurasi would only commit for one year because:
There’s a good chance that Corey Gaines will be moving on to U. of Oregon, which means a new coach next year. Probably Bridget Pettis, who seems capable, but who can predict how she will actually do.
It’s clear (at least to me) that Phoenix badly screwed up their roster this year by having no proven backup at guard. This is forcing the Merc to use a combination of Taylor and Taurasi at point guard in order to compete against the bigger and better clubs. They clearly need to sign a proven point guard or combo guard for next year. Meek is still a solid choice off the bench, but after that, they probably need to start over.
I do think Taurasi will stay in Phoenix after next year if they are able to successfully address these two critical areas.
Say It Isn't So!
